OpenAI Stargate leadership shift

Reports say three senior leaders tied to OpenAI’s Stargate data‑centre plans are moving to Meta as Meta ramps its Superintelligence Labs spending, while construction has also begun on a major Stargate site in Abilene, Texas with OpenAI, SoftBank and Oracle participation. The coverage frames Stargate as selective and execution‑sensitive rather than uniformly advancing or stalled. (ndtvprofit.com) (infobae.com)

Three senior OpenAI leaders tied to Stargate are moving to Meta, even as Stargate’s flagship Texas buildout keeps expanding. (bloomberg.com) (openai.com) Bloomberg reported that Peter Hoeschele, Shamez Hemani and Anuj Saharan are joining Meta, after helping OpenAI line up data-center capacity for its Stargate effort. Meta declined to comment, and Bloomberg said the three executives also declined to comment. (bloomberg.com) Meta is hiring into a business that Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg has tied to heavy infrastructure spending. Bloomberg reported Meta projected as much as $135 billion in 2026 capital expenditures, and said the hires will support Meta Superintelligence Labs. (bloomberg.com) Stargate is OpenAI’s umbrella for the giant computing campuses needed to train and run artificial intelligence models. SoftBank said on January 22, 2025 that Stargate aimed to invest $500 billion over four years in United States infrastructure for OpenAI, with SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle and MGX as initial equity funders. (group.softbank) That plan was never just one site. SoftBank said the buildout was starting in Texas and evaluating more campuses nationwide, and OpenAI said on July 22, 2025 that an added Oracle partnership brought Stargate to more than 5 gigawatts of capacity under development. (group.softbank) (openai.com) Abilene, Texas is the clearest sign the project is real. OpenAI said parts of the Stargate I facility there were already up and running by July 2025, with Oracle delivering the first Nvidia GB200 racks and early training and inference workloads already underway. (openai.com) The site is also large by data-center standards. Crusoe said in September 2025 that the first phase in Abilene was live on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, while its May 2025 financing announcement described a 1.2-gigawatt campus backed by a $15 billion joint venture with Blue Owl Capital and Primary Digital Infrastructure. (crusoe.ai 1) (crusoe.ai 2) OpenAI has also described Stargate more broadly than the original White House rollout. Bloomberg reported the project has since become a catchall brand for OpenAI’s data-center plans, and OpenAI said Stargate now includes partnerships with Oracle, SoftBank and CoreWeave. (bloomberg.com) (openai.com) Meta’s side of the race is moving fast too. CNBC reported on April 8, 2026 that Meta had just released Muse Spark, the first major model from Meta Superintelligence Labs, the unit led by Alexandr Wang after Meta’s June 2025 investment in Scale AI. (cnbc.com) The result is a split-screen picture: Meta is recruiting the people who helped assemble OpenAI’s computing pipeline, while OpenAI is still pointing to live racks, active workloads and more sites under development.
