Google Expands Gemini AI Across Core Apps

Google is deeply integrating its Gemini AI across its consumer product suite. A new "Ask" button in Google Photos allows users to perform complex, nuanced searches of their image libraries, while the upcoming Android desktop OS will feature persistent Gemini access. Google Maps is also reportedly adding a conversational AI to let users "chat" about places and routes.

- The underlying AI has been upgraded to Gemini 1.5 Pro, a more capable model announced at Google I/O 2024 that can process vast amounts of information in a single request. - A key part of the strategy involves Gemini Nano, an efficient version of the model designed to run directly on Android devices for offline tasks, ensuring privacy and low latency. This on-device processing can detect scam calls in real-time and provide smart replies in Google Messages without a network connection. - The integration extends to Google's productivity suite, with Gemini appearing in the side panel of apps like Gmail, Docs, and Sheets to summarize content, answer questions, and generate formulas. Users of the standalone Gemini app can also connect it to their Google Workspace to find information from services like Gmail, Drive, and Calendar. - Google is also developing "Project Astra," a forward-looking initiative aimed at creating a universal AI assistant that can understand context by continuously processing video and audio to be more helpful. - In Google Messages, users can chat directly with Gemini to draft texts, brainstorm ideas, and plan events from within the messaging app. - The broader strategy, which includes integrating Gemini into Google Trends for real-time data analysis, has contributed to the Gemini application surpassing 750 million monthly active users.
