Crypto Access Expands to Retirement Accounts

WealthRabbit has partnered with crypto asset manager Bitwise to offer diversified cryptocurrency access within retirement accounts. The partnership aims to address growing investor demand for easier and more secure ways to invest in digital assets.

- The move follows a significant shift in the regulatory landscape; in May 2025, the U.S. Department of Labor rescinded its 2022 guidance that had urged "extreme care" regarding cryptocurrency in 401(k) plans, adopting a more neutral stance. - This was followed by an August 2025 executive order aimed at expanding retirement plan access to alternative assets, including digital assets, directing the DOL and SEC to re-examine rules for fiduciaries. - Bitwise, the asset manager in the partnership, offers products like the Bitwise 10 Crypto Index Fund (BITW), which seeks to track the 10 largest crypto assets and has a net expense ratio of 2.5%. For comparison, their Crypto Industry Innovators ETF (BITQ) has an expense ratio of 0.85%. - While diversified crypto funds may reduce concentration risk compared to holding a single asset, the overall asset class exhibits high volatility. One analysis found a market-cap-weighted crypto index had an annualized volatility of 95% since early 2017, compared to 16% for the S&P 500 over the same period. - Other major financial institutions are also entering this space, with firms like Fidelity now allowing clients to invest in crypto exchange-traded products (ETPs) within eligible retirement accounts or invest directly through a Fidelity Crypto® IRA. - The potential market impact is substantial, with defined contribution retirement plans in the U.S. holding an estimated $12.2 trillion. A Bitwise report projected that a mere 1% allocation from these funds into Bitcoin could lead to a significant price increase. - WealthRabbit's platform, which offers SIMPLE IRAs, SEP IRAs, and Traditional/Roth IRAs, utilizes Apex Clearing Corporation for its brokerage and custody services. This infrastructure is crucial for handling the complexities of holding and trading digital assets within a regulated retirement account framework.
