Sushi Amamoto Opens in Mayfair
London's Sushi Amamoto opened in Mayfair offering 17-22 course omakase experiences with notoriously tough reservations. Other buzzy openings include Wild Izakaya in the City bringing Tokyo vibes, Michael Deane's new burger venture in Belfast, and East Street's East Asian concept at Sheffield's Meadowhall.
The new Mayfair spot comes from chef Shogo Amamoto, whose original two-Michelin-starred restaurant in Taipei is famed for a waiting list that can stretch over a year and a menu priced around $2,000. The London outpost offers two omakase menus: a 17-course experience for £180 and a 22-course meal for £380. Sushi Amamoto takes over the 36 Albemarle Street location that previously housed Taku, another Michelin-starred omakase restaurant. While founder Watanabe Taku has departed for Paris, the core kitchen team, including Head Chef Jongho Park, has remained to work under Amamoto. The intimate 16-seat counter will serve an edomae-style menu, which focuses on fresh, local ingredients and high-quality British fish. The venture is a collaboration with restaurateurs Geoff and Lucas Leong, known for Koi in Kensington. Securing a reservation requires navigating a strict policy. The restaurant offers only three sittings per day from Wednesday to Saturday, and all guests are served simultaneously. Cancellations made within 72 hours of the booking may result in the forfeiture of the full pre-payment.
