Severe Weather Watch Issued for Chicago Area

Local authorities have issued severe weather watches across Chicagoland. Residents are being advised to stay informed and prepare for potentially hazardous conditions as the situation develops.

A severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are favorable for the development of storms capable of producing large hail and damaging winds. The National Weather Service in Chicago defines a severe thunderstorm as one that produces hail of one inch in diameter or larger and/or wind gusts of at least 58 mph. The City of Chicago's Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) is the lead agency for coordinating the city's response to weather emergencies. They work with the National Weather Service to monitor conditions and disseminate information to the public. Residents can sign up for emergency alerts from Notify Chicago to receive timely updates. The city also utilizes an outdoor warning siren system to alert the public to imminent danger. During a severe thunderstorm watch, it is advised to secure outdoor objects that could be blown away, such as patio furniture. It's also recommended to stay informed by listening to a NOAA Weather Radio or local news broadcasts for the latest updates. If a severe thunderstorm warning is issued, which is a step up from a watch and means severe weather is imminent, the safest course of action is to take shelter in a sturdy building, away from windows. The OEMC may activate warming or cooling centers during extreme weather events. Residents can call 3-1-1 to find the nearest location or to request a well-being check on a neighbor. Historically, the Chicago area has experienced significant severe weather events, including tornadoes and major thunderstorms that have caused widespread power outages and property damage. The city's emergency plans are continuously updated to handle various hazards, from severe winter storms to thunderstorms and potential terrorist attacks, emphasizing a collaborative approach between city agencies and the public.
