Google, Apple Add AI Music Generation

Google and Apple are integrating generative AI features for music creation into their platforms. Google's Gemini AI can now generate short, royalty-free music tracks suitable for social media videos. The move is part of a broader trend by major tech companies to add music-focused generative AI tools, providing content creators and agencies with new options for custom, copyright-safe audio.

- Google's Lyria 3 model, now in beta within the Gemini app, can generate 30-second audio tracks from text, images, or videos. This feature is available for free to all users 18 and older in eight languages, with subscribers to Google AI Plus and Ultra receiving higher usage limits. All generated tracks are embedded with a SynthID watermark to identify them as AI-created. - The 30-second length for Google's generated tracks is a deliberate choice for social media use on platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts, while also potentially mitigating copyright concerns from the music industry. For comparison, other services like Suno offer full-length song generation through a subscription model. - Apple is also entering the AI music space with "Playlist Playground," a feature in the iOS 26.4 beta that allows Apple Music users to create 25-song playlists from text prompts. This feature, powered by Apple Intelligence, will also generate cover art and a description for the playlist. - A significant legal consideration is that under current US Copyright Office guidance, content that is 100% AI-generated cannot be copyrighted and falls into the public domain. This means a competitor could legally use the same AI-generated track for their own marketing. - To address copyright and royalty issues, many AI music generation platforms emphasize that their models are trained on in-house, legally licensed music rather than scraping copyrighted material from the web. This offers a safer, "copyright-safe" option for businesses needing music for commercial use. - Beyond simple track generation, some AI tools offer more advanced editing features. Google's MusicFX includes a "DJ Mode" that allows for the mixing of multiple AI-generated layers in real-time. Other platforms provide tools for stem separation, mastering, and MIDI editing. - The landscape of AI music tools for marketers includes options like CapCut for integrated video and music creation, and others like Suno and Udio that offer strong vocal and genre diversity. Many of these services operate on a freemium model, with paid tiers for commercial usage rights. - For social media managers, AI-generated music provides a quick way to create custom, royalty-free background audio for short-form videos, podcasts, and other digital content without needing musical expertise. Tools like Beatoven.ai and Soundraw are specifically marketed for this purpose.
