Novo Nordisk partners with OpenAI

Novo Nordisk has formed a partnership with OpenAI to apply generative AI across drug discovery, manufacturing and commercial operations as it competes in the weight‑loss drug market. The collaboration was reported by Reuters and framed as part of a broader push to speed development and operational efficiency. (reuters.com)

Novo Nordisk said Tuesday it is partnering with OpenAI to use artificial intelligence across drug discovery, manufacturing and commercial work. (reuters.com) The Danish drugmaker said OpenAI’s tools will help staff analyze large datasets, identify possible drug candidates and shorten the path from research to patient use. Novo said the partnership also covers supply chains, distribution and workforce training. (cnbc.com) Novo announced the deal on April 14, 2026, and said it will integrate OpenAI’s most advanced capabilities globally, with “strict data governance and human oversight” built into the program. (biospace.com) Drug discovery starts with sorting through huge volumes of biology and chemistry data to find molecules that might work, then testing them in labs and clinical trials. Generative artificial intelligence can act like a drafting and search system for that process, helping researchers spot patterns and rank ideas faster. (wsj.com) Novo is making this move while defending its lead in obesity and diabetes medicines with Wegovy and Ozempic, and while trying to catch up with Eli Lilly in the weight-loss market. Reuters reported the OpenAI deal as part of Novo’s push to speed development and improve operations. (reuters.com) The company has been under pressure to make more medicine and develop follow-on products as demand for glucagon-like peptide-1 drugs surged. In its 2025 annual report, Novo said the United States Food and Drug Administration declared the semaglutide injectable shortage resolved in February 2025, and the company said it was still expanding United States manufacturing capacity and strengthening its supply chain. (annualreport.novonordisk.com) Novo’s own filings show how much is riding on that effort. Its 2025 annual report said the company was “acting urgently” to strengthen its obesity and diabetes pipeline through targeted investment and business development. (sec.gov) Other drugmakers are also testing whether artificial intelligence can cut the cost and time of research, but the technology has not removed the need for lab validation, human review or clinical trials. Novo said those controls will remain in place as it rolls out the OpenAI tools. (biospace.com) For now, the partnership gives Novo a new way to search for its next medicines while trying to deliver more of the ones it already sells. OpenAI gets a marquee pharmaceutical customer at a moment when drugmakers are looking for faster ways to move from data to approved treatments. (reuters.com)
