Portland Sandwich Week Ends Today
Today is the last chance to sample creative sandwiches from Portland's top eateries during the Mercury's Sandwich Week. The event celebrates culinary ingenuity and local food culture with participating restaurants offering special creations.
For this year's event, which ran from March 2nd to March 8th, each specially crafted sandwich was priced at a flat $10. This annual event, organized by the Portland Mercury, saw participation from over 80 restaurants across the Portland metro area. Offerings ranged from meat-heavy creations to vegetarian and vegan options. For example, 10 Barrel Brewing offered a "Turkey in a Jam" sandwich, while Ya Hala presented a "Peak Squeak Grilled Cheese" with halloumi, Swiss, and mozzarella. The event showcases a wide array of culinary creativity, with unique sandwiches like the "Pork Katsu Sando" from Deschutes Brewery & Public House and a "Caribbean Sloppy Joe" called the Riki-Taki from Pambiche. Discussions from previous years have included debates on whether the $10 price point constitutes a good value, with some attendees finding it a bargain compared to regular menu prices and others questioning the portion sizes of some offerings. Some establishments use the week to support charitable causes. For instance, The Diner Vancouver, a first-time participant in 2026, announced that proceeds from their "Cubano Stacker" would support Meals on Wheels People. While most restaurants adhere to the promotional price, there have been instances in past years of some adding extra fees, sparking debate among attendees about the transparency of pricing during the event. The Portland Mercury organizes several other food-themed weeks throughout the year, including Burger Week, Weiner Week, and Nacho Week, each with a similar format of special dishes at a fixed price.
