Over 6,000 Tech Roles Cut at India GCCs

More than 6,000 jobs have been eliminated at Global Capability Centers (GCCs) in India as parent companies restructure their global operations. The job cuts signify a broader trend of workforce rationalization and strategic recalibration within multinational technology firms.

- The job cuts were spread across approximately 20 GCCs, with the single largest impact coming from the shutdown of visual effects and animation company Technicolor, which accounted for about 3,000 job losses. - Other multinational corporations that implemented layoffs at their India centers include automotive technology firm AUMOVIO Ford with around 1,000 roles, and Fidelity Investments, which cut about 500 jobs. Companies like Wells Fargo, Target, Boeing, and Oracle also reported restructuring-based layoffs. - The layoffs are largely attributed to macroeconomic pressures, trade frictions, and the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence by parent companies. This is seen by some industry experts as a "sectoral reset" to enhance productivity in a post-AI environment. - Despite these reductions, India saw the establishment of 101 new GCCs in 2025, with a net creation of 135,000 to 150,000 new jobs. This indicates a transition in the sector rather than a decline. - The workforce reduction is concentrated in legacy engineering services, certain back-office operations, and technology product groups with older staffing models. - There is a corresponding strong demand for talent in areas like cloud computing, AI and data science, cybersecurity, and advanced analytics. - The rise of GCCs is also presenting a structural challenge to traditional Indian IT outsourcing firms, as global corporations increasingly choose to insource technology operations directly in India. - Projections for 2026 suggest that while AI-related automation could eliminate over 10,000 more roles, the GCC sector is still expected to add between 120,000 and 140,000 new jobs.
