New Benchmarks for Private Loan Market

S&P Dow Jones Indices and Lincoln International have launched the S&P Lincoln Senior Debt Index series. The new benchmarks are designed to bring greater transparency to the private loan market, a significant development for investors and asset managers.

- The private credit market has grown significantly since the 2008 financial crisis, as increased regulations led traditional banks to reduce lending to middle-market companies. This gap created an opportunity for non-bank lenders to provide financing. - Globally, the private credit market is estimated to be worth over $1.6 trillion, with some analyses suggesting it could be as large as $3 trillion. Projections indicate the market could double to more than $3 trillion in assets under management by 2028. - A major challenge in the private credit market is its opacity; there is little to no public information on borrowers, loan terms, or the overall health of individual loans. This lack of transparency makes it difficult for investors to assess risk and for regulators to conduct oversight. - The new S&P Lincoln Senior Debt Indices were previously known as the U.S. Lincoln Senior Debt Index and the European Lincoln Senior Debt Index. S&P Dow Jones Indices will now be the sole publisher and administrator of this index family. - These indices are designed to track the fair value of direct lending credit investments on a quarterly basis for fund clients in both the U.S. and Europe. They specifically measure the performance of illiquid senior debt facilities issued primarily to companies owned by private equity firms. - Key players in the private credit market include major asset managers like Ares Management, Blackstone, and Apollo Global Management. The primary borrowers are typically small to middle-market companies with annual earnings (EBITDA) between $5 million and $100 million. - Increased investor demand for higher yields, diversification, and downside protection has fueled the growth of the private credit market. Institutional investors, such as pension funds and insurance companies, are the main source of capital.
