Matter and Thread Mature, Unlocking Smart Home Potential
The Matter 1.3 and Thread standards are reportedly delivering on the promise of seamless, cross-vendor smart home integration. With major players like Apple, Google, and Amazon committed, the new standards offer more robust device compatibility and low-latency mesh networking, significantly reducing ecosystem lock-in for DIY projects.
The Matter 1.3 specification, released on May 8, 2024, significantly expands the standard's device support. It introduces compatibility for a range of major appliances, including microwave ovens, cooktops, extractor hoods, and laundry dryers, building on the support for washers in version 1.2. Energy and water management are key focuses of the 1.3 update. The standard now includes energy reporting capabilities, allowing devices to provide real-time data on power consumption. Additionally, it adds support for electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), enabling smart control over vehicle charging. For developers, Matter 1.3 brings core improvements that enhance user experience, such as support for scenes and command batching. This allows for the creation of automations that control multiple devices with a single command. The update also includes enhancements for media devices, improving TV functionality with features like push notifications from other Matter devices. Underpinning many Matter devices is the Thread protocol, an IPv6-based mesh networking technology. Unlike Wi-Fi, Thread is designed for low-power, low-latency communication, allowing battery-operated devices like sensors to run for years. Its self-healing mesh means there's no single point of failure, increasing network reliability.
