Indian Manufacturer Akums Expands European Presence
Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals, India's largest contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), has secured European Union Good Manufacturing Practice (EU GMP) certification for two of its Indian manufacturing facilities. The certification reinforces the company's growing presence and expansion into regulated European and UK markets.
- The two Haridwar, Uttarakhand facilities that received EU GMP certification are designated as Plant 1 and Plant 2. Plant 1 is authorized to produce tablets, hard gelatin capsules, and sachets, while the newly certified Plant 2 will manufacture and supply oral liquid formulations to EU countries. - This certification allows Akums to service a significant €200 million contract in the European market. The approvals, issued by the Bulgarian Drug Agency, are valid for three years, until October 2028. - Founded in 2004 by brothers Sanjeev and Sandeep Jain, who both serve as Managing Directors, Akums has grown to operate over a dozen manufacturing facilities and multiple R&D centers in India. - The company's product portfolio is extensive, covering pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). Their offerings include a wide range of dosage forms such as tablets, capsules, liquids, injectables, and topical applications. - In the fiscal year 2024, Akums reported revenue of ₹1,538.75 crore (approximately US$180 million). For the quarter ending September 2025, the company's CDMO business revenue saw a marginal increase of 0.7% to ₹804 crore. - Europe is a significant market for Indian pharmaceutical exports, accounting for about one-fifth of the total. However, India's share of the EU's pharmaceutical imports is relatively small compared to countries like China, Switzerland, and the United States. - Akums is also expanding its presence in other global markets, having recently received ANVISA GMP certification for its Haridwar facility to enter Brazil and Latin America, and breaking ground on a new facility in Zambia to serve the African market.
