Uchi & Uchibā Coming to Charlotte

Acclaimed Japanese restaurants Uchi and Uchibā are opening in Charlotte in March 2026, promising omakase experiences and innovative cuisine.

Uchi will open March 31, 2026, followed by Uchibā on April 3. Both are located at 1720 Commonwealth Ave. in Plaza Midwood. This marks the first time Hai Hospitality has opened two concepts simultaneously. Uchi offers a modern Japanese dining experience, while Uchibā takes a more casual approach with bar bites. Chef Shaun King, previously at Uchiko Houston, will be chef de cuisine for both Charlotte restaurants. Uchi was founded by James Beard Award-winner Chef Tyson Cole. Cole's journey began as a dishwasher in an Austin sushi restaurant, eventually training in Tokyo and New York. He opened the first Uchi in Austin in 2003. The Uchi Charlotte menu will feature sushi, sashimi, hot and cold tastings, and omakase. Uchibā will offer yakitori skewers, buns, dumplings, and cocktails.
