Illinois Solar Decathlon Builds 'BEACON Home'
The Illinois Solar Decathlon is building its “BEACON Home,” a model for affordable, energy-efficient neighborhoods using cutting-edge solar and passive design. Student-driven solutions here may set the template for future sustainable suburban developments.
The "BEACON Home" is not just a single house but part of a larger vision to create energy-efficient, affordable, community-oriented neighborhoods. The Illinois Solar Decathlon (ISD) has a multi-year plan to build two additional houses on the same plot in Rantoul, IL, in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity. One will be built by Habitat for Humanity, and the other will be another ISD-designed house. ISD's partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Champaign County provides insights into client selection, affordability for homeowners, and preventing disruption to the surrounding neighborhood's economic conditions. The partnership also allows ISD to observe Habitat's homebuilding process, collaborating with their construction manager and architectural design firm. Student labor will also be integrated into the project. To ensure reliable and affordable construction, ISD is partnering with Broeren Russo Builders, a local contractor. Broeren Russo's early input has helped refine the design and enhance budget accuracy. The ISD broke ground in February and anticipates the house taking shape within the next month.
