Delhi Allocates ₹800 Crore for Road Revamp

The government in Delhi has sanctioned ₹800 crore for a large-scale road improvement project. The infrastructure upgrade is expected to ease traffic and could potentially improve last-mile delivery and accessibility for events within the capital.

- This project will upgrade nearly 400 kilometers of road, encompassing over 241 major roads across 45 of the city's Assembly constituencies. - The total approved cost is ₹802.18 crore, with the Central Government contributing ₹643.36 crore from its Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) and the Delhi government providing the remaining ₹158.82 crore. - The Public Works Department (PWD) will execute the project using a "wall-to-wall carpeting" model, which involves strengthening and resurfacing the entire width of the road for enhanced durability, rather than just performing patchwork. - A key objective of the full-width resurfacing is to reduce air pollution by minimizing road dust, which is a significant contributor to particulate matter in the capital. - The project aims for completion by the end of the year and will be carried out in phases to minimize traffic disruption. - This initiative is part of a broader infrastructure plan that saw approximately 150 kilometers of roads strengthened using similar technology last year. - Some of the major roads identified for upgradation include stretches of the Outer Ring Road, Rao Tula Ram Marg, Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, and roads in key commercial areas like Chandni Chowk and Karol Bagh. - Beyond resurfacing, each road will undergo a technical assessment to improve base layers and drainage systems, which is expected to reduce waterlogging issues during the monsoon season.
