USWNT Wins SheBelieves Cup
Alyssa Thompson's 82nd-minute goal clinched the USWNT's eighth SheBelieves Cup title with a 1-0 win over Colombia. The team has now recorded eight consecutive shutouts since October. Tactical substitutions were the "unlock" that changed the game's momentum.
The 2026 SheBelieves Cup, the 11th edition of the tournament, saw the USWNT finish first with nine points. Canada placed second, followed by Colombia in third and Argentina in fourth. The tournament games were held across three cities: Nashville, Tennessee; Columbus, Ohio; and Harrison, New Jersey. Forward Alyssa Thompson, who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, scored her fourth career international goal to secure the win. The decisive play was set up by fellow substitute Jaedyn Shaw, who provided the assist. The entire scoring sequence was driven by substitutes, with Olivia Moultrie and Lindsey Heaps also involved in the build-up. Head coach Emma Hayes credited the victory to the team's depth, stating, "Today we won the game from the bench." In the 61st minute, Hayes made four simultaneous substitutions, bringing on Shaw, Moultrie, Heaps, and Emma Sears, a move that shifted the momentum of the match. The victory continued an impressive defensive streak for the United States, which has not allowed a goal since a match against Portugal in October. The team has now gone 805 minutes without conceding a goal, and was the only team in the tournament to not allow a single goal. The USWNT went undefeated throughout the tournament, securing a 2-0 victory against Argentina and a 1-0 win over Canada in the earlier matches. Goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce, playing in her first tournament with the national team, earned her second consecutive clean sheet in the final. Prior to the final match at Sports Illustrated Stadium, U.S. Soccer honored Tobin Heath with a pregame retirement ceremony. The two-time World Cup winner and New Jersey native made 181 appearances for the national team over a 13-year career.
