Disney's $2.5B Ship Launches

The Disney Adventure — Disney Cruise Line's largest ship ever — was officially christened by Robert Downey Jr. in Singapore and sets sail March 10. The record-breaking $2.5 billion vessel brings new characters and experiences to the Asian cruise market.

The Disney Adventure was acquired by Disney Cruise Line in 2022 after the previous owner, Genting Hong Kong, filed for bankruptcy during its construction. Originally named the Global Dream, Disney purchased the partially completed vessel for a fraction of its original cost and undertook an extensive redesign to align it with the Disney brand. The ship was completed at the MV Werften shipyard in Wismar, Germany, under the management of Meyer Werft, the same company that built the Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wish. As the eighth and largest ship in the Disney fleet, the 208,000-gross-ton Disney Adventure can accommodate approximately 6,000 passengers and 2,300 crew members. It is also among the first in the cruise industry to be powered by green methanol, one of the lowest-emission fuels available. The ship's arrival in Singapore marks the first time a Disney Cruise Line vessel will be based in Asia. The ship is designed as a "destination itself," with most of its initial sailings being three- and four-night cruises-to-nowhere from Singapore. This five-year homeporting arrangement in Singapore is expected to significantly boost the region's fly-cruise market. Onboard, the Disney Adventure is divided into seven themed areas, including the central Disney Imagination Garden, a "Moana"-inspired Wayfinder Bay, and a "Big Hero 6"-themed San Fransokyo Street. The ship boasts a number of firsts, including the Ironcycle Test Run, the first-ever roller coaster on a Disney ship. Entertainment is tailored to the Asian market, with unique shows like "Duffy and The Friend Ship" and a fireworks display set to "The Lion King" with narration by global star Shah Rukh Khan. Dining options are also localized, with Asian dishes available at all dining venues and specialty offerings like a bubble tea shop. Even the ship's stern features Singapore's national flower, the Vanda Miss Joaquim, woven into the design. The ship features unique stateroom options, such as Premium Garden View rooms with verandahs overlooking the central Imagination Garden hub instead of the ocean. There are also Discovery Reef View staterooms that look out over an indoor promenade. In addition to family areas, there are dedicated adults-only spaces, including the Palo Trattoria Italian restaurant.
