OpenAI Closes Record $110B Funding Round
OpenAI has closed a historic $110 billion private funding round, valuing the company at $730 billion pre-money. The deal includes a commitment of up to $50 billion from Amazon, which cements AWS as a key cloud provider, alongside major investments from Nvidia and SoftBank.
This record-breaking funding round positions OpenAI for a potential initial public offering as early as late 2026. The new capital is earmarked for expanding data centers and securing advanced chips to meet the surging global demand for AI applications. Amazon's $50 billion commitment is structured with an initial $15 billion, with the remaining $35 billion contingent on either a future IPO or the achievement of artificial general intelligence (AGI) milestones. In a parallel agreement, OpenAI will spend $100 billion over eight years on Amazon's cloud and semiconductor infrastructure, expanding on a pre-existing $38 billion commitment. Nvidia's $30 billion investment solidifies the symbiotic relationship between the two companies, giving the chipmaker a financial stake in one of its largest customers. This follows a previous letter of intent for a potential $100 billion investment from Nvidia, which was framed around OpenAI's purchase and deployment of its chips. SoftBank's $30 billion contribution, to be delivered in three tranches, will raise its total investment in OpenAI to $64.6 billion, representing an ownership stake of approximately 13%. The Japanese investment giant has been a backer of OpenAI since September 2024. This massive infusion of capital will fuel OpenAI's ambitious and costly pursuit of artificial general intelligence. The company's roadmap outlines a five-level progression, starting from conversational AI like the current ChatGPT and aiming for autonomous AI agents and systems. While Microsoft remains OpenAI's largest shareholder and a key partner, it did not participate in this funding round. The existing licensing and product access arrangements between the two companies, particularly concerning Microsoft's Azure cloud platform, remain unchanged.
