Another C-Suite Role: Chief AI Officer
The race to integrate AI is reshaping the C-suite, with financial data provider FactSet appointing a Chief AI Officer and a new CTO. The move highlights a broader industry trend of creating senior executive roles dedicated to embedding AI at the core of business strategy and operations.
FactSet's new Chief AI Officer, Kate Stepp, is not an external hire but was promoted from her previous role as Chief Technology Officer, a position she held since September 2022. Stepp's appointment is effective as of March 2, 2026, and she will now report directly to CEO Sanoke Viswanathan. The CAIO role is rapidly becoming a staple in the corporate world, with one report indicating that 26% of organizations globally now have a Chief AI Officer, a significant increase from 11% just two years prior. This surge reflects a shift from experimental AI projects to embedding AI as a core, operational component of business strategy. The primary driver for this new executive role is the need for centralized leadership to bridge AI's technical aspects with tangible business outcomes. A Chief AI Officer is responsible for the entire AI lifecycle, including strategy, governance, implementation, and ensuring ethical and responsible use of the technology. This trend isn't confined to the private sector; the U.S. government has also mandated that every federal agency appoint a CAIO to oversee AI governance and accountability, following Executive Order 14110. This has led to a wave of CAIO appointments across agencies like the Department of Energy and the Department of Homeland Security. The demand for senior-level AI talent has ignited a talent war, with financial services firms, tech companies, and hedge funds competing for a limited pool of qualified candidates. This scarcity is driving up compensation, with executive search firms noting that the CAIO is currently one of the "hottest jobs in the market." The responsibilities of a CAIO often involve close collaboration with other C-suite executives, including the CTO and Chief Data Officer, to manage infrastructure, data quality, and model deployment. They are also tasked with fostering an AI-literate culture and upskilling the workforce to ensure broad adoption and value generation.
