Study Links Parental Mindfulness to Children's Prosocial Behavior

A recent study in *Frontiers in Psychology* found that parental mindfulness is associated with increased prosocial behavior in preschoolers. The effect is mediated by marital quality and an authoritative parenting style. The findings reinforce the importance of parent self-regulation and mindful engagement, which are key components of many parent coaching programs.

- Prosocial behaviors like sharing, helping, and comforting can contribute to a child's social adjustment and are linked to better academic performance and overall well-being. - Authoritative parenting, distinct from authoritarian or permissive styles, is characterized by warmth, responsiveness, and clear expectations. This parenting style is associated with higher levels of prosocial behavior in children. - A meta-analysis of 31 studies with over 14,000 participants found a positive link between good marital quality and prosocial behavior in preschoolers. Conversely, negative marital quality, such as conflict and aggression, is linked to a decrease in these behaviors. - Family systems theory suggests that different relationships within a family are interconnected; positive emotions from a healthy marriage can "spill over" into more sensitive and supportive parenting. - Mindfulness-based interventions for families with children who have ADHD have been shown to improve parents' self-compassion and mental health, with these benefits lasting at least six months. While direct improvements in a child's self-control were less significant, teachers and parents did note reductions in inattentiveness and hyperactivity. - Mindful parenting involves specific practices such as listening with full attention, non-judgmental acceptance of oneself and the child, emotional awareness, self-regulation in the parent-child relationship, and compassion. - Research indicates that mothers who practice mindfulness are more likely to engage in prosocial behaviors like sharing, which is a key developmental milestone for preschoolers. - For parents of children with ADHD, mindfulness-based stress reduction interventions have been found to be feasible and effective, leading to an improved quality of life for the parents and a reduction in child hyperactivity.
