Anthropic's Claude App Hits #1
Despite recent political backlash, Anthropic's Claude app has surged to the #1 spot on the U.S. App Store. The rapid consumer adoption highlights a significant market shift, even as the company faces scrutiny from the Pentagon over its AI restrictions.
The surge in Claude's popularity is directly linked to a public dispute with the U.S. Department of Defense. Anthropic executives refused to remove ethical restrictions that prevent its AI from being used for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons systems. The Pentagon required that its AI models could be used for "all lawful purposes" without such restrictions. In response to Anthropic's refusal, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth labeled the company a "supply-chain threat to national security," and former President Donald Trump ordered all federal agencies to cease using Anthropic's technology. This move effectively blacklisted the company from a potential $200 million contract and other government use. The public backlash against the government's stance and competitor OpenAI's simultaneous agreement to work with the Pentagon appeared to fuel Claude's rapid ascent. Data showed Claude jumping from outside the top 100 on the App Store at the end of January to the #1 spot, surpassing competitors ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. This user migration is reflected in Anthropic's growth metrics. The company reported that since January, free active users have increased by over 60%, daily signups have quadrupled, and the number of paid subscribers has more than doubled in 2026. The controversy has highlighted a growing tension between AI developers' safety principles and governmental demands for unrestricted access to technology. While Anthropic faces the loss of federal contracts, its public stance has resonated with consumers, turning a political conflict into a significant market advantage. Financially, Anthropic remains a heavyweight in the AI space. The company raised $30 billion in a recent funding round, achieving a post-money valuation of $380 billion. This places it as the second-most valuable generative AI startup, behind only OpenAI.
