Singapore Targets Four Industries for AI Push
Singapore's government is launching coordinated "AI missions" to accelerate AI transformation in advanced manufacturing, connectivity, finance, and healthcare. The strategy is supported by increased national funding for business adoption and workforce readiness. However, experts warn that upskilling the workforce is a key hurdle to realizing the full benefits.
- The initiative is a core component of Singapore's National AI Strategy 2.0 (NAIS 2.0), which aims to more than triple the country's AI practitioner workforce to 15,000. The strategy is overseen by a new National AI Council chaired by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. - To support the strategy, Singapore is investing S$1 billion from 2025 to 2030 in public AI research and development, focusing on fundamental AI, applied AI, and talent. This follows a previous investment of over S$500 million between 2019 and 2023. - The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) is a key actor in setting governance standards, having launched the world's first Model AI Governance Framework for Agentic AI in January 2026. This builds on existing frameworks and the AI Verify governance testing toolkit. - Singapore is actively fostering international collaboration, leading the ASEAN Working Group on AI Governance and hosting events like the Singapore AI Research Week alongside the 40th AAAI conference to engage global partners. - To drive adoption in the private sector, the government is offering significant tax incentives through the Enterprise Innovation Scheme. Businesses can claim 400% tax deductions on qualifying AI expenditures up to S$50,000 annually for the assessment years of 2027 and 2028. - The government's digital transformation agency, IMDA, has also released tools to aid businesses, including a "GenAI Playbook" with best practices and a "GenAI Navigator" to provide targeted recommendations for specific business goals.
