MWC Barcelona Kicks Off

MWC Barcelona 2026 opened its doors with a call for the industry to complete the global 5G rollout, confront AI challenges, and strengthen digital safety. The event brings together tech leaders to navigate the next phase of digital growth, with companies like ZTE showcasing full-stack AI innovations.

This year's MWC is themed "The IQ Era," focusing on the convergence of intelligence and connectivity. Six core tracks guide the discussions: Intelligent Infrastructure, ConnectAI, AI 4 Enterprise, AI Nexus, Tech4All, and Game Changers, with AI being the common thread throughout. The event is expected to draw around 110,000 attendees, with over 2,900 exhibitors and more than 1,200 speakers. A significant focus is the industry's shift from AI experimentation to large-scale deployment and monetization. Discussions are centered on moving beyond "chatbots" to embedding AI into infrastructure, including AI-in-RAN (Radio Access Network) and AI-powered network automation. Companies like ZTE are showcasing full-stack AI innovations across networks, cloud, and devices, reinforcing a strategy of "All in AI, AI for All." The conversation around 5G has evolved from initial rollout to achieving network quality and densification. With 5G Standalone (SA) deployments accelerating globally, the focus is now on 5G-Advanced capabilities to unlock new revenue streams, particularly for enterprise services. Huawei, for instance, has unveiled a suite of products designed to unleash the potential of 5G-A as a bridge to 6G. Digital sovereignty and online safety are prominent topics, with European policymakers prioritizing the EU's reliance on foreign technology. The proposed Digital Networks Act and Cloud and AI Development Act are expected to be key subjects of discussion. There's also a strong emphasis on strengthening digital trust through innovations in secure, frictionless user verification, moving away from SMS-based authentication. For the first time, MWC is making a significant foray into space technology and satellite connectivity. This includes exploring non-terrestrial networks (NTN) to address connectivity gaps and discussions on future technologies like quantum computing. The event also features an "Airport of the Future" immersive experience, showcasing how connected technologies are transforming air travel. Hardware innovation remains a central attraction, with major brands like Xiaomi and Honor making significant announcements. Lenovo is showcasing concept products, including a foldable gaming handheld. Beyond phones, there is a growing presence of robotics, with Honor featuring both its Robot Phone and a humanoid robot.
