New Video Details Oral Board Tactics

A new video, "Interviews 101," compiles tips from active-duty firefighters and hiring panelists for oral board success. Key advice includes prioritizing authenticity over memorized answers and preparing a specific, 60-second pitch on "Why Seattle?" that connects to community values.

The Seattle Fire Department's oral board is a highly structured part of a multi-phase hiring process; it is not a conversational interview. Candidates who pass the initial FireTEAM written exam and a Public Safety Self-Assessment are invited to this stage, with only the top 1,500 scorers moving forward. The interview panel will ask all candidates the exact same set of questions to ensure fairness. Unlike some departments, Seattle's interview can feel impersonal, like an "interview factory," because the panelists know nothing about your background beforehand. The format heavily favors behavioral questions answered using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Expect questions about teamwork, handling conflict, dealing with emergencies, and times you went above and beyond for a patient or teammate. The oral board score is combined with your written test and behavioral assessment scores to create a final ranking on a public civil service register. That register, established in March 2026, will be used to hire for recruit classes beginning in August 2026 and February 2027. Only candidates in the top 25% of the register are moved forward to the next steps, which include the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and a final interview with the Fire Chief. Beyond the interview, SFD looks for candidates engaged with the city. The department runs several community programs, including Health One, which provides outreach to vulnerable populations and frequent 9-1-1 users. They also offer station tours and participate in public events, providing opportunities for prospective candidates to interact with current firefighters.
