AMD Challenges Apple with New Desktop AI Chips

AMD has announced its Ryzen AI PRO 400 Series desktop processors, which feature integrated NPUs to accelerate AI workloads. The new chips are designed to enable Copilot+ PC experiences on desktops, creating direct competition for Apple's Neural Engine in its M-series silicon.

The new AMD processors are built to meet Microsoft's "Copilot+ PC" specification, which requires a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) capable of at least 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS). AMD's XDNA 2-powered NPU surpasses this, delivering up to 50 TOPS for on-device AI acceleration. This directly challenges Apple's latest M4 chip, whose 16-core Neural Engine is rated at 38 TOPS. Beyond the NPU, the Ryzen AI 400 series integrates "Zen 5" CPU cores and RDNA 3.5 graphics, representing a significant architectural update for desktop chips on the AM5 socket platform. The Copilot+ standard mandates not just NPU performance but also a minimum of 16 GB of RAM and a 256 GB solid-state drive. These requirements are creating a new baseline for premium AI-capable machines across the Windows ecosystem, with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X series and Intel's upcoming "Lunar Lake" Core Ultra processors also targeting this spec. Initially, the Ryzen AI 400 desktop chips will not be sold directly to consumers as standalone products. Instead, they will be supplied to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), with pre-built systems expected to arrive in the second quarter of 2026. This strategy mirrors the rollout of the mobile Ryzen AI PRO 400 series, which appeared in workstations from partners like Dell, HP, and Lenovo. While AMD's NPU shows a higher peak TOPS figure, Apple's engineering focus has traditionally emphasized performance-per-watt and the tight integration of its unified memory architecture. Benchmarks often show AMD competing favorably with Apple's M4 Pro chips in multi-threaded CPU tasks, though comparisons against the highest-tier M4 Max are less common.
