Long Beach Shooting Leaves One Dead
A shooting at a crowded street gathering in Long Beach on Sunday afternoon left one person dead and two others wounded. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances that led to the incident.
The shooting occurred around 3:30 p.m. in the 200 block of Pine Avenue, near a parking structure. The violence erupted near the grand opening of a new Marathon Burger location, an event that drew a large crowd. The gathering celebrated the legacy of the late rapper Nipsey Hussle, with celebrities like Snoop Dogg and YG in attendance earlier in the day. Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson also attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony prior to the shooting. Chaos ensued as gunfire sent attendees running for cover. Police who were already assigned to the event heard an altercation followed by gunshots. Three men in their early 20s were struck by the gunfire. One of the victims was pronounced dead at the hospital, while the other two were reported to be in stable condition. As of Monday, police had not yet publicly identified the deceased victim. Investigators have not yet determined a motive for the shooting, and no arrests have been announced. The Long Beach Police Department is asking anyone with information to contact their investigators. This incident follows a reported increase in homicides in Long Beach in 2024, which saw 38 murders compared to 26 in 2023. Overall violent crime in the city rose by 2.8% in 2024.
