Jonathan Anderson on His New Vision for Dior

Dior's new creative director Jonathan Anderson revealed his approach to the house in a new interview, admitting he was initially skeptical about couture. He aims to create a "new language for Dior that is both rooted and radically open," signaling a collaborative, narrative-driven strategy for the legendary brand.

Jonathan Anderson's appointment marks the first time a single creative director will oversee all of Dior's collections—womenswear, menswear, and haute couture—since Christian Dior himself. This move unifies the brand's vision after the nine-year tenure of Maria Grazia Chiuri, the house's first female artistic director known for her feminist messaging, and Kim Jones, who led Dior Men for seven years, successfully merging streetwear with couture tailoring. Anderson arrives from Loewe, another LVMH brand, where he served as creative director for 11 years. During his tenure, he was credited with transforming the Spanish house into a cultural powerhouse, increasing its annual revenues fivefold and establishing the prestigious Loewe Foundation Craft Prize, underscoring a deep commitment to artisanship. His own label, JW Anderson, launched in 2008, is known for a cerebral, often playful and surrealist aesthetic that frequently explores gender fluidity. Anderson's approach is deeply intertwined with the art world, using collections to create narratives and cultural dialogue, a method he is expected to bring to Dior. The appointment comes at a critical time for the brand. While parent company LVMH reported record revenues of €86.2 billion in 2023, Dior's sales have seen double-digit declines in recent quarters, placing significant pressure on Anderson to reignite growth. Industry insiders are watching closely to see how Anderson's avant-garde sensibility will translate at a heritage brand of Dior's scale. His first collection for Dior Men is slated for June 2025, with his highly anticipated debut in womenswear to follow in October.
