Boston earns six Bib Gourmands

Michelin’s first look at Boston included six Bib Gourmand awards this week, spotlighting restaurants judged for quality and value (wror.com). The Bib recognitions came as Michelin rolls coverage into new U.S. cities for 2026 (wror.com).

Boston’s first Michelin Guide selection includes six Bib Gourmand restaurants, giving the city an opening wave of recognition for meals Michelin says deliver quality and value. (guide.michelin.com) The six Bibs listed by Michelin are Fox & The Knife and Bar Volpe in Boston, Sumiao Hunan Kitchen, Jahunger and Pagu in Cambridge, and Mahaniyom in Brookline. Michelin’s Boston Bib page shows “1-6 of 6 restaurants.” (guide.michelin.com) Michelin published Boston’s inaugural full selection on November 18, 2025, under its new Northeast Cities edition. That list spans 26 restaurants in Boston and nearby communities, including one One Star restaurant, 311 Omakase, plus the six Bib Gourmands. (guide.michelin.com 1) (guide.michelin.com 2) Bib Gourmand is Michelin’s label for restaurants that pair strong cooking with more moderate prices, rather than the higher-end tasting-counter model often associated with Michelin stars. Michelin uses the designation across its United States guide and lists hundreds of Bib restaurants nationwide. (guide.michelin.com) Boston’s arrival came after Michelin announced in May 2025 that Boston and Philadelphia would join a newly created Northeast Cities guide alongside Chicago, New York City and Washington, District of Columbia. Michelin made that expansion with Meet Boston and the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau. (guide.michelin.com) That regional format mirrors Michelin’s broader United States strategy. In 2025, the company also launched the American South guide, covering multiple states and Atlanta in a single edition instead of adding only one city at a time. (guide.michelin.com) The six Boston-area Bibs tilt toward neighborhood dining rather than formal luxury rooms. Michelin classifies Fox & The Knife and Bar Volpe as Italian, Sumiao Hunan Kitchen as Chinese, Mahaniyom as Thai, and Jahunger and Pagu as Asian. (guide.michelin.com) Two of the six Bibs belong to chef Karen Akunowicz in South Boston. Michelin’s inspectors describe Bar Volpe as a “neighborhood hangout” and trace Fox & The Knife to Akunowicz’s cooking shaped by time in Italy. (guide.michelin.com 1) (guide.michelin.com 2) For diners, the Bib list is the most direct answer to what Michelin found first in Greater Boston: not just a star at the top, but six places where the guide says the bill stays closer to everyday reach.
