Global Telcos Launch AI Alliance
The GSMA, representing the world's top mobile operators, has launched a new initiative called “Open Telco AI.” The platform aims to accelerate the development of telecom-grade AI by providing shared tools and datasets for challenges like network optimization and automation.
The initiative was spearheaded by a core group including AT&T and AMD, who serve as founding supporters. AT&T is contributing a family of open telco-models, which have been trained on publicly available data and are designed to be hardware and cloud-agnostic. AMD is providing the necessary computing power for training, fine-tuning, and evaluating these AI models through its GPU platforms and its cloud partner, TensorWave. A significant gap exists between the capabilities of general-purpose AI and the specific needs of the telecommunications industry. According to the GSMA, a mere 16% of generative AI deployments within the telecom sector have been utilized for network operations, as these general models often struggle to accurately interpret complex network data and technical standards. The alliance has garnered broad support from a number of major global operators and technology firms. The list of participants includes China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, Google Cloud, IBM, Nvidia, Orange, Telefónica, and Vodafone, among others, who will contribute with data, models, and use cases. Louis Powell, Director of AI Initiatives at the GSMA, stated that current AI models lack the complexity, precision, and reliability that the telecom industry requires. He emphasized that "AI does not yet speak telco," highlighting the need for industry-wide collaboration on datasets, models, and benchmarks to bridge this gap. The initiative aims to create a shared foundation to improve the accuracy, safety, and efficiency of AI in telecommunications.
