DTCC expands tokenization with big managers
- DTCC said on May 4 it advanced DTC’s tokenization service with more than 50 firms and scheduled limited production trades for July 2026. - On July 15, DTCC said more than 30 firms processed live tokenized trades; Tradeweb separately executed a real-time tokenized U.S. Treasury transaction on July 1. - DTCC said the Tokenization Service is scheduled for commercial launch in October 2026, following July production trades and ongoing industry working-group collaboration.
DTCC is moving its tokenization effort out of the pilot phase and into live market plumbing. The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation said in May that more than 50 firms had joined work on DTC’s tokenization service, with limited production trades planned for July and a commercial launch targeted for October 2026. On July 15, DTCC said it had successfully converted DTC-held securities into tokens and used them in real production trades across multiple workflows. That matters because DTCC is not a startup building a side platform. DTCC runs core post-trade infrastructure, and its tokenization service is designed to let securities move between traditional and blockchain-based environments while keeping the same CUSIP and legal rights. DTCC says the service will initially support tokenized representations of real-world assets that can be delivered to participant wallets on approved blockchain ecosystems. DTCC said on May 4 that it was advancing development of The Depository Trust Company’s tokenization service with input from more than 50 financial firms. The group is working on operational and technical workflows ahead of launch, including the use of tokenized securities in collateral mobility, securities lending and repo transactions. DTCC said on July 15 that the live production event covered collateral pledge, securities lending, U.S. (dtcc.com) Treasury and repo delivery-versus-payment trades, equity DVP trades, equity delivery-versus-delivery trades, equity token transfers and central counterparty margin workflows. Frank La Salla, DTCC’s chief executive, said the company had shown it could apply “the same institutional rigor to tokenization” as it does to traditional assets. Franklin Templeton transferred a tokenized U.S. Treasury security to Virtu Financial in exchange for tokenized cash, while Tradeweb handled execution and price discovery. (dtcc.com) Tony Pecore, senior vice president and director of digital asset management at Franklin Templeton, said the trade was “a building block toward a 24/7 liquidity layer.” Elisabeth Kirby, Tradeweb’s head of market structure, said the transaction showed how execution tools could support digital markets by moving both the security and cash in real time. (tradeweb.com) ### Is this about new assets or new settlement rails? DTCC says it is about both asset representation and market connectivity. Its tokenization materials say DTC-held securities can move between traditional and tokenized form, giving participants access to both conventional and blockchain-based liquidity pools. The company also says registered participants will be able to move tokenized assets between approved wallets on supported ecosystems on a 24/7 basis. (tradeweb.com) DTCC’s design also preserves controls familiar to regulated markets. The firm says DTC-issued tokens will include functions such as mint, burn, force transfer, clawback, freeze and pause, and that its LedgerScan tool will track ownership across traditional and blockchain ledgers in near real time. ### Why are firms testing Treasuries, collateral and repo first? DTCC’s own materials point to collateral and post-trade workflows as the most practical early use cases. (dtcc.com) A DTCC-hosted ISDA podcast in February said tokenization could deliver 24/7 settlement, programmatic margin terms and improved capital efficiency in collateral management. Franklin Templeton’s Sandy Kaul and DTCC’s Joseph Spiro said broader adoption would depend on governance and interoperability across chains. Tradeweb’s July 1 Treasury transaction makes that point in a concrete way. The firms involved used a tokenized Treasury and tokenized cash in a synchronized on-chain settlement process, which Tradeweb said reduced the timing constraints of traditional infrastructure. ### What happens next? DTCC said on July 15 that the production milestone set the stage for a commercial launch in October 2026. (dtcc.com) The company has also said it will keep working with its industry group on readiness, interoperability and additional trade-lifecycle automation after the initial rollout.
