New Median Delineators on PCH
Overnight lane closures began Tuesday on the PCH in Malibu as Caltrans installs new median delineators [https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/overnight-lane-closures-planned-on-pch-in-malibu/3859332/].
These median delineators are part of a larger effort to improve safety on the Pacific Coast Highway. Malibu officials declared a local emergency due to dangerous driving on the 21-mile stretch of PCH. From 2011 to 2023, about 170 people were killed or seriously injured on PCH in Malibu. Speeding is a major factor in accidents, with 61 fatalities in the past decade attributed to excessive speed. The city has implemented several safety measures, including increased law enforcement and infrastructure improvements. CHP and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department issued 4,790 traffic citations between January and June 2024, a 74% increase. Injury collisions also decreased by 36% during that same period. Other improvements are planned, including speed cameras at high-risk locations by early 2026. A $19 million project to synchronize traffic signals along an 8-mile stretch of PCH was recently completed.
