Atalanta's Epic Champions League Comeback

Atalanta staged a sensational 4-1 turnaround over Borussia Dortmund from 2-0 down in Champions League knockout play-offs, winning 4-3 on aggregate with a last-gasp penalty. Real Madrid beat Benfica 2-1 thanks to Vinícius Júnior's winner, while Juventus fell 3-2 after extra time to Galatasaray (5-7 agg.) and PSG edged Monaco 2-2 (5-4 agg.).

Atalanta's incredible 4-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund on the night was sparked by a goal from Gianluca Scamacca just five minutes into the match. Davide Zappacosta added a second before halftime, and Mario Pašalić's header in the 57th minute gave the Italian side the lead on aggregate for the first time. Dortmund substitute Karim Adeyemi scored in the 75th minute to level the aggregate score, seemingly pushing the tie towards extra time. However, a high boot from Ramy Bensebaini on Nikola Krstovic deep into stoppage time resulted in a penalty after a lengthy VAR review. Bensebaini, who had already been shown a yellow card, was sent off. Lazar Samardžić coolly converted the high-pressure spot-kick to seal the dramatic 4-3 aggregate win for Atalanta. The comeback was crucial for Italian football, as it prevented Serie A from having no representation in the Champions League Round of 16 for the first time since the 1987-1988 season. In another of the night's tense match-ups, Real Madrid secured their spot in the last 16 with a 3-1 aggregate victory over Benfica. After a 1-0 win in the first leg, an Aurélien Tchouaméni goal and Vinícius Júnior's 80th-minute winner were enough to see them through, despite a Rafa Silva goal for the visitors. The all-French clash between PSG and Monaco ended in a 2-2 draw on the night, but the Parisian side advanced 5-4 on aggregate. Monaco took a first-half lead through Maghnes Akliouche before Mamadou Coulibaly was sent off. Goals from Marquinhos and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put PSG ahead, but a late Jordan Teze equalizer for Monaco ensured a tense finish. Juventus, meanwhile, were knocked out of the competition by Galatasaray in a thrilling tie that went to extra time. Despite winning the second leg 3-2 with goals from Manuel Locatelli, Federico Gatti, and Weston McKennie, a 5-2 first-leg deficit was too much to overcome. Galatasaray scored twice in extra time through Victor Osimhen and Barış Alper Yılmaz to win 7-5 on aggregate.
