Kyoto and Himeji fees rise

Local Japanese destinations are adding new charges: Kyoto’s accommodation tax can reach about 10,000 yen per night for luxury stays, and Himeji Castle admission fees are doubling. (The Traveler and Nomad Lawyer report the lodging‑tax increases and the doubling of castle admission.) ( )

Kyoto began charging a much higher lodging tax on March 1, with the top rate now set at 10,000 yen per person, per night. (kyoto.travel) The new Kyoto schedule applies to overnight stays inside the city and rises with the room price: 200 yen for stays under 6,000 yen, 400 yen for 6,000 yen to under 20,000 yen, 1,000 yen for 20,000 yen to under 50,000 yen, 4,000 yen for 50,000 yen to under 100,000 yen, and 10,000 yen for 100,000 yen or more. (city.kyoto.lg.jp) Kyoto Travel said the city has collected an accommodation tax since October 1, 2018, and said the revised rates are meant to support tourism promotion and “sustainable urban development” for residents and visitors. (kyoto.travel) Himeji Castle also raised prices on March 1. General admission for visitors age 18 and older is now 2,500 yen, up from 1,000 yen, while Himeji residents age 18 to 64 pay 1,000 yen and visitors under 18 enter free. (city.himeji.lg.jp) Himeji’s official castle site said the new pricing was set after the city estimated the next 10 years of maintenance, preservation repairs, and site improvements needed to pass the castle on to future generations. (city.himeji.lg.jp) The two fee changes land as Japan keeps managing heavy visitor traffic in its best-known destinations. Kyoto has spent the past year rolling out crowd-control steps on some bus routes and tourist areas, while Himeji caps entry to the main keep at 1,000 people per hour for safety and preservation. (kyoto.travel, city.himeji.lg.jp) For travelers, the practical effect is simple: a luxury hotel stay in Kyoto now carries a much steeper nightly tax, and a standard adult visit to Himeji Castle costs 1,500 yen more than before. (city.kyoto.lg.jp, city.himeji.lg.jp) Both changes are already in force, so spring and summer 2026 visitors are seeing the higher charges now rather than later in the year.
