AllTrails Hiking App Climbs App Store Ranks

The location-based hiking and running app AllTrails has climbed three spots to #9 in the Health & Fitness category. Its rise signals strong consumer adoption for outdoor and activity-tracking apps that leverage GPS and mapping features.

AllTrails' recent ascent in the app store rankings is backed by a significant capital infusion, having raised a total of $151 million over three funding rounds. A major boost came in November 2021 with a $150 million investment led by Permira, which has fueled the app's product development and international expansion. The company operates on a freemium model, generating revenue from its premium "AllTrails Plus" and "AllTrails Peak" subscriptions. The "Plus" tier offers features like offline maps and wrong-turn alerts, while the newer "Peak" tier, introduced in May 2025, leverages AI for custom trail routing and provides predictive weather modeling. This strategy has proven effective, with the app surpassing 1 million paid subscribers. The broader user base is substantial, with the platform boasting a community of over 60 million people and featuring more than 420,000 curated trail routes across 191 countries. A key driver of AllTrails' growth is its user-generated content, which powers its SEO and organic growth, accounting for nearly all of its user acquisition. The platform has also focused on strategic partnerships, including a first-of-its-kind collaboration with the West Virginia Department of Tourism and a recent partnership with Western National Parks to enhance visitor experiences. In a move to further solidify its market position, AllTrails has engaged in brand-building efforts such as its first major media campaign, "Find Your Outside," in June 2024. This marketing push coincided with significant platform updates and aimed to connect with a broader audience beyond dedicated hikers. The app's success has not gone unnoticed, as Apple named AllTrails the iPhone App of the Year in 2023, a significant recognition among nearly two million apps. This award highlighted the app's user-friendly design and its role in encouraging outdoor exploration. While AllTrails is a category leader, it faces competition from other popular hiking apps like Gaia GPS, which is noted for its detailed topographic maps, and Komoot, which also has a strong community focus. These competitors also offer robust feature sets for outdoor navigation and planning.
