Victorinox and JBS USA Partner Up

Victorinox, the maker of the Swiss Army Knife, has formed a strategic partnership with JBS USA, a leading global food company. The two industry leaders will collaborate to advance operational performance and yield optimization, uniting Swiss precision with large-scale food production.

This partnership will integrate Victorinox's new DataMatrix-Code (DMC) commercial knives into JBS USA's operations. Each knife is laser-engraved with a unique code, allowing for detailed tracking of its usage, maintenance, and sanitation history, which is critical for enhancing hygiene and traceability in large-scale food processing. The collaboration aims to leverage Victorinox's expertise in blade technology to improve meat processing yields. Studies and industry experts have shown that the sharpness and design of a knife directly impact the amount of usable meat from a carcass; sharper, well-designed blades reduce waste and require less force, leading to more precise cuts and faster processing times. For a company of JBS's scale, even small improvements in yield can have a significant financial impact. For JBS USA, this alliance is part of a broader push for operational efficiency. The company is in the midst of a multi-year global transition to SAP S/4HANA to streamline its financial structures and data management. The integration of Victorinox's trackable knives aligns with this strategy of using technology to enhance performance and gain more detailed operational insights. While Victorinox is globally recognized for its Swiss Army Knives, its professional and household knives represent a significant portion of its business, with the company producing 90,000 of these knives daily. The professional knife segment is a key market, and this partnership with a major food producer like JBS USA solidifies Victorinox's position in the commercial cutlery space. The collaboration will also focus on co-developing new tools tailored to the specific needs of JBS's facilities. This involves analyzing the ergonomic and efficiency challenges faced by workers in high-volume meat processing environments. Sharper knives have been shown to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders by decreasing the cutting force required by up to 62.8%. JBS USA operates nine beef production facilities with a processing capacity of 28,000 cattle per day, and five pork facilities with a capacity of 92,000 hogs per day. The sheer volume of their operations underscores the potential impact of optimizing cutting tools and processes on both productivity and employee well-being.
