The Sims 4 Gets Virtual Currency
EA is rolling out "Moola" virtual currency and a Maker Program for The Sims 4, designed to reward user-generated content and further empower creators within the game's ecosystem. The new system represents EA's continued evolution of the long-running life simulation franchise.
The new in-game Marketplace, launching March 17 for PC and Mac, will function similarly to The Sims 3's "Store," allowing players to purchase "Maker Packs" with the virtual currency "Moola." These packs are curated collections of Create-a-Sim or Build/Buy items designed by community members approved for the Maker Program. For the first time, this system will bring officially supported custom content to console players, who were previously limited to official DLC. The content will be integrated directly into the game, eliminating the need for players to exit and restart, a common requirement for installing unofficial mods. Creators, or "Makers," will receive a 30% revenue share from their sales on the Marketplace. For every 100 Moola a player spends on a creator's content, the creator earns approximately 30 cents USD. EA has stated it will cover associated costs like platform fees, taxes, and server maintenance. This revenue split has drawn comparisons to other user-generated content platforms. In contrast, creators on Roblox can keep up to 70% of revenue for certain items, while Second Life, a pioneer in virtual economies, offers its creators a 90% share of transactions. The introduction of Moola, which is purchased in bundles ranging from $2.49 to $49.99, has sparked debate among players. Concerns have been raised about the system effectively introducing microtransactions into a game that has historically relied on a large ecosystem of free, fan-made content. While EA has confirmed that free custom content can still be offered on other platforms, items sold in the new Marketplace cannot be available elsewhere. Additionally, official "Kits" will now be sold exclusively through the Marketplace, requiring players to purchase Moola to acquire them.
