U2 Returns to Studio

U2 has returned to the studio with drummer Larry Mullen Jr. back in action, reportedly working on a "defiantly joyful" new album. The band's latest project represents a shift in mood and theme from their most recent releases, marking a significant creative direction change.

- The new album will be the band's first collection of original songs since 2017's "Songs of Experience." Their most recent album, "Songs of Surrender" (2023), was a project featuring 40 re-recorded and reinterpreted tracks from their back catalogue. - Frontman Bono has stated the band has over 25 songs in consideration for upcoming projects and that the new album will have a "carnival vibe" to counter the current "anxious times." - This "defiantly joyful" theme contrasts sharply with a surprise six-song EP the band released in February 2026, titled "Days of Ash," which tackled somber and political topics. - Drummer Larry Mullen Jr. is rejoining the band after sitting out their recent Las Vegas residency to recover from neck surgery. He has reportedly adjusted his drumming setup and style to ensure his longevity. - While Mullen was recovering, Dutch drummer Bram van den Berg, from the band Krezip, filled in for U2's 40-show "U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere" residency in Las Vegas. - Mullen attended the final weekend of the Las Vegas residency as a spectator in early March 2024, where Bono acknowledged him from the stage.
