Mount LeConte weekday closures

- The Bullhead Trail to Mount LeConte in Great Smoky Mountains National Park will close on weekdays for rehabilitation. - Park authorities say closures will be sporadic and continue through the fall season. - Hikers are advised to check trail status before planning spring visits because weekday access may be restricted (knoxnews.com).

Hikers heading to Mount LeConte will lose weekday access to the Bullhead Trail starting May 4 as Great Smoky Mountains National Park resumes a long repair project. (nps.gov) The park said Bullhead Trail will be closed Monday through Thursday each week, except federal holidays, through Nov. 19. Hikers can still use the trail Friday through Sunday, and the park said it plans to reopen it fully in November. (nps.gov) Bullhead is one of several routes to Mount LeConte and covers 13.6 miles round trip. The National Park Service said crews are regrading about 3 miles of trail, repairing stone retaining walls, adding steps and erosion controls, and removing exposed roots and rocks. (nps.gov) The work is aimed at a trail that sees heavy use on one of the park’s best-known hikes. Great Smoky Mountains National Park says the project is meant to improve safety, drainage and tread surfaces while slowing erosion on the mountainside. (nps.gov) The closure also affects one of the approaches to LeConte Lodge, the high-elevation lodge near the summit that supplies are known to reach by llama. Local coverage said spring hikers should check trail status before weekday trips because access will be limited for much of the main hiking season. (wate.com, knoxnews.com) This is the second season of a multi-year Bullhead rebuild. The park announced in 2025 that it would close the trail on weekdays through Nov. 6 that year, then resume work in May 2026. (nps.gov) The project is being done with Friends of the Smokies through the Trails Forever program, which funds a permanent trail crew for major rehabilitation jobs in the park. WBIR reported volunteers will be able to assist the crew on Bullhead each Wednesday starting May 20. (nps.gov, wbir.com) The park’s trail page already warns that Bullhead is closed Monday through Thursday for rehabilitation and calls the hike strenuous, with crowding and limited parking near the trailhead. For hikers trying to reach Mount LeConte this spring and summer, the practical change is simple: Bullhead becomes mostly a weekend route until late fall. (nps.gov, nps.gov)
