Kroger Launches AI Lab for Shopper Experience
Kroger has established a dedicated AI lab to focus on improving shopper experience and operational efficiency. The lab's priorities include real-time inventory tracking, personalized offers, and autonomous replenishment. The initiative will leverage agentic AI systems capable of both perception and action to automate key workflows.
- The AI lab is a collaboration with Nvidia and is located at Kroger's Cincinnati headquarters. It will utilize nine Nvidia DGX A100 systems and Nvidia Omniverse Enterprise for creating digital twin simulations of its stores to optimize layouts and operations. - A key focus of the lab is on improving the freshness of products by using computer vision and analytics to identify early indicators of spoilage. It also aims to optimize last-mile delivery routing to ensure products stay fresh from the farm to the customer's home. - Kroger is also deploying an AI-powered shopping assistant for customers, developed in partnership with Google Cloud, that can handle complex conversational requests for meal planning and building a shopping cart. This "agentic AI" is designed to understand customer preferences and data to provide a personalized shopping experience. - For its employees, Kroger has developed an AI assistant named "Sage" which allows associates to manage schedules, request time off, and view pay stubs through a mobile app. This tool has been credited with improving employee retention. - The company's data science subsidiary, 84.51°, utilizes AI to analyze data from over 62 million households to deliver personalized coupons and product recommendations. This has resulted in a 16% increase in total revenue and a 17% increase in transactions where these personalized offers were used. - In addition to in-store and online applications, Kroger has been using AI and robotics in its automated fulfillment centers, developed in partnership with the UK-based company Ocado, to handle online orders more efficiently. - The AI initiatives have already shown tangible results, with executives reporting improvements in pricing, reductions in inventory shrink, and faster fulfillment times, including two-hour pickup for customers. - This is part of a broader industry trend where major grocers like Walmart and Albertsons are also heavily investing in AI for everything from inventory management to personalized customer experiences.
