Chiefs Trade McDuffie to Rams
The Kansas City Chiefs made a surprise move by trading All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams. The deal marks a significant change in KC's defensive backfield, with the rationale appearing both financial and strategic as they retool ahead of the draft.
In exchange for McDuffie, the Chiefs received a significant haul of draft capital: the Rams' 2026 first-round pick (No. 29 overall), a fifth- and sixth-round pick in the 2026 draft, and a third-round selection in 2027. This trade marks the second time in three years Kansas City has opted to trade a top cornerback rather than sign them to a major contract extension, following the 2024 trade of L'Jarius Sneed. The move was largely driven by finances for Kansas City. McDuffie was entering the final year of his rookie contract, a fifth-year option that would have cost $13.6 million against the salary cap. The trade clears that money, providing the Chiefs with significant cap relief. The team went from being well over the salary cap to having an estimated $24.8 million in available space. For the Rams, acquiring McDuffie addresses what was considered their most glaring weakness. The secondary was a liability last season, and the team faced the prospect of multiple cornerbacks, including Cobie Durant and Roger McCreary, leaving in free agency. General manager Les Snead has a history of making aggressive trades for cornerbacks, previously acquiring Jalen Ramsey in a 2019 blockbuster. McDuffie, a first-team All-Pro in 2023 and second-team selection in 2024, is expected to sign a long-term contract extension with Los Angeles soon after the trade becomes official. Reports suggest the new deal could make him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL, with an annual salary exceeding $30.1 million.
