Meta Acquires AI Startup Manus

Meta has agreed to acquire Manus, a Singapore-based startup that develops AI agents for small and medium-sized businesses. The deal underscores Big Tech's strategic push to integrate more sophisticated AI tools into their business ecosystems, targeting the large SMB market.

The acquisition was valued at over $2 billion, making it Meta's third-largest deal ever, behind only the acquisitions of WhatsApp and its strategic investment in Scale AI. The entire transaction was reportedly completed in an unusually fast-tracked timeline of about ten days. Manus is not another chatbot. Its core product is a general-purpose autonomous AI agent capable of executing complex, multi-step business tasks—like market research, coding, and data analysis—with minimal human input. This "agentic AI" plans and executes workflows, a significant step beyond the prompt-and-response model of tools like ChatGPT. Prior to the acquisition, the Singapore-based startup was already a commercial success, operating on a subscription model. Founded in 2022, Manus had surpassed $100 million in annual recurring revenue just eight months after its launch, signaling a strong product-market fit among business users. The deal provides Meta with a revenue-generating AI product to help monetize its massive infrastructure investments. The strategy, articulated by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, is to build "personal superintelligence" that acts on behalf of individuals and businesses. Manus's technology is already being integrated into the Meta Ads Manager to automate campaign tasks. Manus was originally founded in China by CEO Xiao Hong before its parent company, Butterfly Effect, relocated to Singapore in 2025. Following the acquisition, Meta confirmed there would be no continuing Chinese ownership interests, and Manus would discontinue its services in China. This acquisition is part of a larger industry consolidation trend where tech giants are buying specialized AI companies to gain immediate capabilities. It follows Meta's multi-billion dollar investment in data-labeling firm Scale AI and comes amidst other major AI deals, such as Anthropic's acquisition of Vercept to advance its own AI agent capabilities.
