Black Jet Baking Co. Expands to Outer Sunset
Black Jet Baking Co., famous for its upscale pop-tarts, is opening a new luncheonette in San Francisco's Outer Sunset neighborhood. The expansion marks a significant move for the popular Bernal Heights bakery, adding to the growing food scene in the area.
The new outpost, dubbed Black Jet Luncheonette, is slated for a June 2026 opening at 4033 Judah St., taking over the space formerly occupied by DamnFine Coffee, which closed in October 2025. While bakery staples like croissants, pies, and giant seasonal cake slices will be available, the new location will emphasize savory offerings. Co-owners Gillian Shaw Lundgren and Max Newman plan to introduce a rotating menu of four daily made-to-order sandwiches, including a chicken salad sandwich and a meatball grinder, with all breads like sourdough focaccia and Dutch crunch made in-house. The expansion allows the team to lean into the savory expertise of co-owner and chef Max Newman, a Zuni Café and Marla bakery alum. The goal is to offer items you could "grab on your way to the beach," according to Shaw Lundgren, with Newman's popular pan pizza also expected to join the menu eventually. Founder Gillian Shaw Lundgren, a former law firm employee, started Black Jet Baking Co. as a wholesale operation in 2010. She initially delivered cookies and handmade "Pops" to coffee shops and offices around San Francisco before establishing a brick-and-mortar presence. The brand's first retail shop opened on Cortland Avenue in 2017 after a successful Kickstarter campaign raised $75,000 to move into a former bakery space. That Bernal Heights location became a neighborhood staple known for nostalgic American-style desserts. The new luncheonette joins a thriving Outer Sunset food scene known for destination bakeries and eateries. It will be neighbors with established local favorites like Devil's Teeth Baking Company, Outerlands, and Hook Fish Co., contributing to the area's reputation as a culinary hub.
