UC Irvine Health Details Data Strategy After Epic Migration

Following a migration to an independent Epic instance, UC Irvine Health is taking a phased approach to data governance and is working to "productionize" AI beyond pilot programs. In a recent podcast, VP of Data and Analytics Mayil Dharmarajan stated the organization is using FHIR APIs and TEFCA to reduce HIE costs and improve analytics. The strategy prioritizes the most critical data governance needs for the next 6-12 months to avoid overwhelming the organization.

- In a significant expansion, UC Irvine Health recently acquired four hospitals from Tenet Healthcare, adding 858 inpatient beds to its system. These facilities, which include Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Lakewood Regional Medical Center, are slated to migrate from a Cerner EHR to UC Irvine Health's Epic system within the next year to 18 months. - The move to an independent Epic instance follows UC Irvine Health's earlier, first-of-its-kind partnership with UC San Diego Health, where they shared a single Epic EMR platform. That collaboration, which began in November 2017, was designed to reduce start-up costs by an estimated 30% and improve operational efficiency. - The organization's data strategy is led by Mayil Dharmarajan, who has served as the Vice President of Data and Analytics since 2024. His background includes expertise in data science, machine learning, and data mining. - The use of TEFCA is part of a national strategy to create a unified framework for health information sharing, aiming to reduce costs for providers by eliminating the need for multiple point-to-point connections. This framework is designed to make patient data more accessible across different care settings, regardless of the specific EHR system in use. - "Productionizing" AI in an acute care setting involves moving beyond pilot programs to embed AI into core clinical workflows, such as using predictive analytics for early disease detection or to anticipate patient needs in the ICU. AI-driven tools can also help reduce administrative burdens by automating clinical documentation and summarizing patient consults. - At UC Irvine Health, the governance of artificial intelligence is a key consideration, with leaders like Chief Medical Information Officer Dr. Deepti Pandita emphasizing that AI tools must be thoroughly vetted for clinical relevance, transparency, and compliance with patient privacy laws before implementation. - Epic Systems, the vendor for UC Irvine Health's EHR, reported revenues of $4.9 billion in 2023 and is used by healthcare systems that hold the records of over 305 million patients. Major implementations of Epic's system can cost large health systems upwards of $650 million.
