JR Transforms Paris Bridge
French street artist JR is converting Paris's oldest bridge into a giant walk-through "cave" installation, creating an immersive public artwork expected to draw crowds and spark conversations about art in urban spaces. The dramatic transformation represents a new approach to integrating large-scale street art into historic city infrastructure.
- The installation, titled "La Caverne du Pont Neuf" (The Pont Neuf Cavern), is a direct tribute to artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, marking the 40th anniversary of their iconic 1985 work, "The Pont Neuf Wrapped," which saw the bridge covered in golden fabric. - Scheduled to run from June 6-28, 2026, the structure will be 120 meters long and over 17 meters high, and accessible to the public free of charge, 24 hours a day. - The project's "cave" concept is an allusion to Plato's allegory of the cave, which JR connects to modern times by comparing the shadows on the cave wall to the curated realities presented on social media platforms. - Inside the installation, visitors will walk through a tunnel devoid of daylight to create a feeling of total immersion, which will be enhanced with a unique soundscape created by Thomas Bangalter, formerly of the electronic music duo Daft Punk. - Though its name means "New Bridge," the Pont Neuf was completed in 1607 and is the oldest standing bridge in Paris; it was considered innovative for being built of stone and without houses along its sides. - JR is known for other large-scale public works, including a 2016 installation that made the Louvre Pyramid seemingly disappear through an optical illusion and a 2017 piece that placed a giant photograph of a child peeking over the U.S.-Mexico border wall. - The design is inspired by the Lutetian limestone quarries that provided the original stones for the Pont Neuf and many other historic buildings in Paris, aiming to bring a sense of raw nature back to the city's core.
