DeFi Firm Invests in Dividend-Backed Stablecoin

DeFi Development Corp., a public company with a treasury strategy focused on Solana, announced a strategic investment in Apyx. Apyx is a protocol for a dividend-backed stablecoin (DBS), and DeFi Development Corp. was the first institutional capital to invest in the project.

- The Apyx protocol's yield-bearing stablecoin, apyUSD, offers a 30-day estimated annual percentage yield (APY) of 13.25%, with a potential range of 11-33% from leveraged dividend payments. - The system uses two tokens: `apxUSD` is the primary stablecoin backed by a basket of variable-rate perpetual preferred shares from Digital Asset Treasuries (DATs), while `apyUSD` is a "yield wrapper" that earns interest. - Yield is generated from the off-chain dividend cash flows of the preferred shares backing `apxUSD`. This APY is calculated using a 30-day trailing average of these dividends, which is then annualized with monthly compounding. - The stability of `apxUSD` is supported by being over-collateralized with this basket of low-volatility preferred shares and also utilizes Protocol-Owned Liquidity (POL) as a buffer during market stress. - Unlike stablecoins backed by fiat currency or other cryptocurrencies, Apyx's model is dependent on the financial health of the DATs and their ability to consistently pay dividends on their preferred equity. - DeFi Development Corp. (Nasdaq: DFDV) is a public company whose treasury strategy is to accumulate and compound Solana (SOL). Its CEO, Joseph Onorati, views the Apyx investment as key infrastructure for the DAT ecosystem, creating a feedback loop between public balance sheet yields and on-chain markets. - The investment positions DeFi Development Corp. as an early institutional participant in the emerging Dividend-Backed Stablecoin (DBS) category, aiming to capture a share of the over $300 billion stablecoin industry that currently offers little to no native yield. - This model represents a hybrid approach, merging traditional finance (TradFi) cash flows from corporate dividends with the efficiency and transparency of decentralized finance (DeFi).
