Anthropic CEO: Culture is Key to Winning AI Race

Dario Amodei, CEO of AI safety firm Anthropic, stated that he spends up to 40% of his time focusing on company culture rather than products. He argued that cultivating an ethical and collaborative workplace “is the only thing that will win the AI race,” emphasizing the importance of non-technical skills in the competitive AI landscape.

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by CEO Dario Amodei, his sister Daniela, and five other senior members from rival OpenAI. Amodei, formerly OpenAI's VP of Research who led the development of GPT-2 and GPT-3, departed due to fundamental disagreements over AI safety and the company's direction. In November 2023, during OpenAI's leadership crisis, its board approached Amodei to take over as CEO and potentially merge the two AI labs. Amodei declined both offers, choosing to maintain Anthropic's independent path focused on building steerable and reliable AI systems. The company operates as a public benefit corporation, a structure intended to balance profit with its mission of responsible AI development. This safety-first identity was a key differentiator, codified in a "Responsible Scaling Policy" that initially promised to halt development if safety couldn't be guaranteed. However, in February 2026, Anthropic amended this core policy, stating it will no longer automatically pause model development to match competitors' pace, citing a policy environment that has shifted to prioritize competitiveness and economic growth. This strategic shift comes amid intense competition with OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, as Anthropic's own model, Claude, gains significant traction, particularly with enterprise customers. Enterprise clients now account for approximately 80% of Anthropic's business. The company is backed by massive capital, having raised $30 billion in February 2026 for a total valuation of $380 billion. Major investors include tech giants like Google and Amazon, which has committed a total of $8 billion.
