New Retail Funds Access Pre-IPO Giants

Two groundbreaking funds launched this week give retail investors access to pre-IPO equity in tech giants: Robinhood's RVI (March 6th) and Fundrise's VCX (March 10th). These funds offer exposure to Anthropic, OpenAI, and SpaceX — companies previously reserved for institutional investors. Anthropic's valuation jumped from $380B to $500B on secondary markets within weeks.

The new funds are structured as publicly traded closed-end funds, a key difference from traditional venture capital that often requires long-term capital lock-ups. This structure means that after the initial offering, shares of both Robinhood's RVI and Fundrise's VCX can be bought and sold on the New York Stock Exchange, offering daily liquidity to retail investors. Robinhood's RVI, which began trading on March 6, 2026, has no investment minimum and an annual management fee of 2.00%, which is reduced to 1.00% for the first six months after the IPO. The Fundrise Innovation Fund (VCX) has a minimum investment of just $10 and carries an annual management fee of 1.85%. Both funds are notable for not charging performance fees, a common practice in traditional venture capital. The creation of these funds addresses a significant shift in capital markets, where the number of U.S. publicly traded companies has decreased from about 7,000 in 2000 to around 4,000 in 2024. This trend has kept much of the high-growth phase of technology companies within private markets, previously inaccessible to the general public. While providing access, these investments carry inherent risks beyond typical public equities. Pre-IPO companies have limited financial transparency and their valuations can be volatile. Furthermore, should the portfolio companies go public, their original shares are often subject to lock-up periods, typically 90 to 180 days, which would restrict the fund from selling those assets immediately post-IPO.
