California corrections officials are searching for Jose Barrios, a 24-year-old inmate who walked away from a Los Angeles reentry program on April 26. (cdcr.ca.gov) The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said Barrios removed his GPS device and was discovered missing at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday from a Male Community Reentry Program site in Los Angeles. (cdcr.ca.gov) (ktla.com) CDCR said Barrios is serving a seven-year sentence for second-degree robbery and was received from Los Angeles County on June 17, 2024. He was most recently received from the California Institution for Men in Chino on January 28, 2026. (cdcr.ca.gov) The Male Community Reentry Program is a voluntary custody-to-community program for eligible inmates who are within 365 days of release. Participants can live and work in the community at the program’s discretion while serving the rest of their sentences. (cdcr.ca.gov) CDCR said Barrios is 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighs 160 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a gray sweater and gray pants, and officials said he may have left in a white vehicle. (cdcr.ca.gov) (goldrushcam.com) When someone leaves a state reentry program without authorization, CDCR’s Office of Correctional Safety notifies local law enforcement and begins a search. State officials said anyone who sees Barrios should call 911 or contact Special Agent R. Torres at 909-322-8197. (cdcr.ca.gov) The case follows other Los Angeles-area reentry walkaways in 2025, including Dijon Barber, who was later captured in Las Vegas after leaving a Male Community Reentry Program facility. (patch.com) (lasvegassun.com) As of CDCR’s April 26 notice, Barrios remained at large and the search was ongoing. (cdcr.ca.gov)
