Fremont, CA, Recognized for EV Readiness
The city of Fremont, California, has earned a "Charging Smart Gold" designation for its electric vehicle readiness. The award highlights the city's commitment to supporting the growing demand for EVs through targeted infrastructure development and supportive local policies.
The "Charging Smart" program is a U.S. Department of Energy-funded initiative led by the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC). It provides free technical assistance to help local governments streamline policies and adopt best practices for electric vehicle readiness, with communities earning Bronze, Silver, or Gold designations for their achievements. Fremont's Gold designation was awarded for specific actions, including streamlining the permitting process for EV chargers, installing public charging stations at parks and city facilities, and expanding the city's own electric fleet. This achievement is part of a broader city strategy, outlined in its "Climate Ready Fremont" plan, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% from 2005 levels by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2045. The city's commitment to clean energy is not new. In 2024, Fremont became the first city in the nation to receive a "Platinum" designation from the SolSmart program, a sister program to Charging Smart, for its efforts in advancing solar energy. This earlier recognition highlighted the city's work in simplifying solar permitting and promoting solar adoption among residents and businesses. Fremont is home to a significant number of electric vehicles, with 29,134 registered in the city between 2010 and 2024. To support this growing fleet, the city has a robust public charging network consisting of 420 charging ports, the majority of which are Level 2, with a smaller number of DC Fast Chargers. Data from late 2022 showed that Fremont had the most battery-electric vehicles on the road in the Ava Community Energy service area with 13,500. A major influence on Fremont's EV landscape is the Tesla factory, which has produced over 3 million vehicles since its opening in 2010 and employs more than 20,000 people. The presence of the factory has had a noticeable impact on local EV adoption, with the zip code that includes the factory having one of the highest numbers of EVs per household in the region. Looking ahead, Fremont plans to continue expanding its EV infrastructure as part of a $296 million city-wide infrastructure plan. This includes installing new public charging stations and ensuring that new developments are EV-ready. The city is also focused on electrifying its own vehicle fleet and partnering on the installation of fast-charging mobility hubs for residents of multifamily properties.
