CNN reportedly acquired by MAGA ally

A media analysis video reports that CNN has been acquired by an ally of the MAGA movement. The development is framed as part of a larger shakeup that includes aggressive restructuring at CBS, raising concerns about journalistic independence and the potential for a broader fight over the future of the free press.

CNN is currently a division of Warner Bros. Discovery, which was formed in April 2022 through the merger of AT&T's WarnerMedia and Discovery, Inc. The CEO and president of this parent company is David Zaslav. Warner Bros. Discovery had announced plans to split into two separate companies by mid-2026. Under this plan, CNN would become part of a new entity called "Global Networks," alongside other cable channels like TNT Sports and the Discovery Channel. The other company would focus on "Streaming & Studios," including Warner Bros. and HBO. However, in late 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery announced it was open to a sale and had received "unsolicited interest" from multiple parties for the entire company or its separate divisions. This has created uncertainty about the future ownership of CNN. One of the potential buyers is Paramount Skydance, led by CEO David Ellison. His father, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, is a prominent ally of Donald Trump. Reports have emerged of discussions between a Paramount Skydance official and the White House about potential programming changes at CNN, including the removal of hosts critical of Trump. A key figure in the current ownership structure is John Malone, a major shareholder in Warner Bros. Discovery and its chairman. Malone, who has donated to Donald Trump's campaign, has publicly stated his desire for CNN to adopt a more "centrist" approach, similar to what he perceives as Fox News's model of balancing news with opinion. These developments have led to concerns among some CNN staffers about the network's journalistic independence. The potential for new ownership, coupled with the influence of figures like Malone, has fueled speculation about a significant shift in the network's editorial direction.
